Black Walnut

Juglans nigra

The black walnut tree generally grows 50 to 80 feet. Its bark is dark and smooth when young, becoming even darker and fissured with age. The meat of the nut is sweet and edible and attracts wildlife.

It is fairly well adapted to a wide range of soils from sandy to heavy clays. It likes plenty of moisture and good drainage.
